Is Russia sliding into dictatorship?
Yes

# President Putin has crushed free speech, dissent is not allowed, murders of outspoken journalists go unsolved and many opposition leaders are barred from fighting election.

# Russia is governed by the arbitrary laws, silencing NGOs, and opposition demonstrations are threatened with clampdown is clear indication that dictatorship stranglehold is gripping Russia.

No

# Economic prosperity has become a bigger concern than the freedom of expression and Putin rule has catered this well to the Russians.

# West’s cold war mentality has pushed Russia into a corner forcing it to assert itself, for in 2008 Russia is not an evil empire longing to striking back.

NO.. Putin should be afforded the respect what he actually deserves. He has managed everything to navigate Russia strongly through extremely turbulent and dangerous times. He has the potential, energy, will and charismatic character to do well for Russian people.

Putin is like KGB who restored law and order in Russia and fulfilled the dream of Yury Andropov, Putin's mentor and role model. Now, Russia has oil and gas money both that means the old and strong Russia is coming back.

Western media is calling Putin as dictator because they are upset because Russia is reorganizing itself and gaining its strength slowly and steady to become a superpower once again. US definitely won't like it.

Putin is great political leader. He has clear thinking about Russia's role in the world. He believes that the dissolution of the Soviet Union was a tragedy. He knows strong head and rigidity will take Russia back to old golden days. You might call him a dictator and I think there is nothing wrong if he works to make Russia world power again. India needs such political leader.

Putin wants Russia and America to be friends but he generally feels the US treats his country like the uninvited guest at a party. This is because the US does not need partners but only subsidiary units to command easily. The US doesn't believe in friendship but domination over others. Putin is definitely not that kind of material. So, people have started calling him dictator.

Russians never had any say on who ruled them. First it was the Czars, then came the commies and now ’democratic’ leaders like Putin.

As Virgile from France says, Russia is already under a dictatorship.

In November 2006, I wrote an article here in Instablogs comparing the Soviet era dictators and the present day ruler Putin. Check it out here.

Putin is setting a dangerous precedent with the new formula that he has devised for power sharing between the President and the Prime Minister in Russia after he relinquishes office as the Russian constitution mandates. With him running for the PM's post, and getting his puppet elected as President, he will continue to dictate Russia through shrewed manipulation.

Power has gone into Putin's head and with billions of oil dollars pouring in we are witnessing a revive of the cold war era type of soundbytes from the Russian leaders especially Putin.

But we need a strong old-fashioned russia to counter US. Without a counter balance the US has crossed all limits of global indecency. So good or bad, a strong dictator is needed in a powerful country like Russia that can assert itself in the international scene.

Anyone here who can point out just a single thing that Putin did against the interest of the country or its people. So far none!

Putting gags on smartarse news channels and frivolous politically motivated media was in the larger interest of Russia.

Vladimir Putin has done a miracle on Russia. Remember the days of hardship and misery after the collapse of the Soviet Union under Boris Yeltsin.

For me Putin is the leader of the century.

Someone mentioned Yuri Andropov here. The ex-KGB boss who became the General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union thus the supreme leader of USSR. He ruled USSR for just 15 months. He did nothing. So what dreams are you talking about? He was a very insignificant leader in USSR's long long list of celebrated leaders.

Putin chasing Andropov's dreams? LOL
